Although not playing the original, The Escapists 2 is still an enjoyable game, especially if you don't have a lot of time on your hands as it can be played in spurts with how the game and save mechanics work, each day lasting around fifteen minutes.  However, the first prison you play through might take a while to escape if you're not familiar with how the game works.  Though the tutorial level does help out a bit, there were still some things I didn't know about that would have made things a lot easier my first time playing.

There’s a lot of “downtime” where you’re just waiting for things to happen, but that’s prison. You’re learning the routine of the jail, finding openings, and in the meantime, there are plenty of “quests” for other prisoners you can complete to build up your arsenal and keep yourself busy until you find the perfect opening. And as in life, in The Escapists 2 proves that duct tape can fix anything. If you’ve never played the series, or if you love it, it’s certainly worth th...

With some choice additions to an already great formula, The Escapists 2 is a neat little game which is sure to capture your attention. It does have a rocky start thanks to a sparse tutorial and a steep learning curve, but the sheer amount of possibilities and the inspired open-ended design will have players back for more even after they’ve broken out of every prison. It’s certainly a more thoughtful, methodical game than something like Monaco, but with patience, Mouldy Toof and Team17 will have you feeling like a real master of escape.

There isn’t much in the way of a story for The Escapists 2. For each level, you are brought into a prison, given a quick tour, and then must find a way out. Your escapes are bookended with cute little intro and outro cutscenes, assuming you actually can escape. Make no mistake about it, The Escapists 2 is brutally hard and you’ll need extreme patience and persistence to succeed. In prison, you’ll come across other inmates, guards, guard dogs and civilians (prison employees). Inmates will either offer money for completing favors or they’ll sell contraband to you. The favors could range from beating an inmate up to planting a dead mouse in an inmates desk. Contraband could include crowbars, duct tape, razor blades, and more. You’ll use contraband, along with prison-accepted items like combs and toothpaste, to create all manner of tools to aid in your escape. Grappling hooks, shovels, pick-axes – pretty much everything you’ll need to escape, and even some odd things that’ll make you cock your head to the side and ask “why would I need that?”.

The Escapists 2 offers a unique sandbox prison escape experience, but it may be a little overwhelming for some players.

What The Escapists 2 does do is improve its look, expand your options for escape, and throws in a hilarious multiplayer. What The Escapists 2 does not do is make itself significantly more accessible and forgiving. If that put you off the first time, there’s little to convince you to play the sequel, but for fans, this is a rather pleasant upgrade.

Sequel to the sandbox prison-escape game, The Escapists 2 features drop-in/drop-out multiplayer and offers both split-screen and online play for up to four players in both co-op and versus modes.

The scope is impressive, though, as a large amount of variables make The Escapists 2 a dense, packed game. That all becomes too overwhelming, sadly. It just feels like a niche product that a small group of people that adore the concept are going to sink a ton of hours into while many others just bounce off of it. For an open sandbox game that relies on the user to enjoy the experience utilizing their imagination, the journey to the goal just isn’t enjoyable enough. My hope going in was that I would be spending time coming up with creative ideas to fool guards and bypass security. Instead, wh…

Every new prison is a wonder to behold and a challenge to be conquered, the thrill and anticipation of success escalating as you tackle progressively tougher and more varied penitentiaries. It isn’t perfect, and frustration will rear its ugly head from time to time, but for all its quirks, The Escapists 2’s blend of excitement and tension will keep you hooked. Lock yourself away with The Escapists 2 and you won’t regret it.

The Escapists 2 is an good prison break game that could use a few more additions to make it a great one. If you don't like RNG, this isn't for you, but fans of the first one or purveyors of co-op modes will be satisfied with the title.

Almost everyone has heard of history's amazing prison escapes, like Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin fleeing from the world-famous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in 1962. The men spent six months preparing, and used everything from papier-mâché dummy heads left in beds to raincoats stitched together into a lifeboat. The Escapists 2 gives you the same types of tools to escape a variety of themed confines, but also shares the tedium of working slowly toward an elusive goal. The improvements over the previous game are plentiful and novel, but the frequent loss of progress and lack of manual saves stifles experimentation.

I am not an escapologist. I know, in no uncertain terms, that I couldn’t gracefully escape from a particularly tucked in bed, let alone a high-security prison. But that is where The Escapists 2 comes in. Now, I need not worry about being trapped in a faulty elevator, when I can skillfully plan my perfect escape.

The Escapists 2 is a game that has added a lot to the formula that gave its predecessor success, while managing to maintain its core identity. If you played the original Escapists then getting the sequel is a no brainer, while if you fancy taking on a generally very challenging game where you have to rely on your own wits then The Escapists 2 may be just what you’re looking for. There will be times when you get a little frustrated when you lose an item through messing with the wrong guards or a plan going wrong, but when you finally escape you’ll feel elation as you’ll love it when your plan comes together.
