Capcom goes back to basics with Street Fighter V, but has left plenty unfinished.
Street Fighter 5 was one of Capcom’s many missteps in the previous generation that saw the infamous publisher at one of its historic lows. It was seemingly a hell of a learning experience since those hard times led to Resident Evil’s resurgence, one of the best Mega Man games, a bunch of well-made retro collections, and, now, Street Fighter 6. Capcom has emphasized the “Street” part of the title to great effect, giving it a distinct personality to go alongside its tight and traditional fighting mechanics that restore this franchise to some of its former glory.
The Arcade Edition certainly makes up for all the criticisms tossed at the Street Fighter V for lacking content. This is a damn fine fighting game now, it’s just a shame everyone had to wait two years to get it.

And, really, when even the most niche fighting games are getting a proper handle on all this, it’s completely unacceptable for t…
Street Fighter V is the latest installment in the fighting franchise, adding new fighters, several new locations, and cross-platform play.
An almost peerless fighting game experience sadly let down by lack of core features and gameplay modes.
Street Fighter V has all of the makings of a fantastic fighting game. Unfortunately, that is all it has: makings. There are some performance issues to go along with a serious lack of content that is meant to constitute a full game experience, which is criminal, to say the least.
It’s true that some Street Fighter fans probably think that nobody cares about single player content or even assistive modes like trials and challenges, and the debate about their worth is easily outside of the scope of this review in progress. But their absence is especially felt here especially when compared to its contemporaries. Street Fighter V is an astoundingly solid fighter, but it’s hard to definitively judge it until it’s expanded to what it should have been at launch. Props to Capcom for releasing early for the tourney crowds, however, it’s a bold move that’ll be interesting to see ...
