Improving upon the ideas started in the first game, SteamWorld Dig 2 impresses in every way imaginable, and offers an experience that will have you glued to your screen as you dig deeper and deeper into its vast and unique mines.
Any complaint about difficulty spikes is outweighed by the sheer brilliance of the rest of the game, however. SteamWorld Dig 2 takes everything fans loved about the original game and turns the dial up to eleven. It’s bigger, better, and even more addicting than its predecessor, and absolutely deserves a spot in every single Switch owner’s library.
Grab your pickax and dig into SteamWorld Dig 2, a platform mining adventure forged in Metroidvania flames.
I don’t want to get too much into unlockables and narrative because the story is short and I really think you should discover it for yourself. I also want this review to minimize spoilers because you can easily complete the game in a weekend. For $20, Steamworld Dig 2 packs an immense amount of value and fun into a refreshing platformer with an interesting narrative, lots of explosions, and the satisfying feeling of exploration and constant progression. If Nintendo didn’t come out of left field with a remake of Metroid II, I would urge any Metroid fan to pick up SteamWord Dig 2 immediately. However, with Metr
If you didn’t like the gameplay loop of Steamworld Dig, then there are probably not enough changes here to massively alter your opinion. But for those of us who did enjoy it, then Steamworld Dig 2 will happily suck us right back in, the refinements made creating the perfect balance between familiarity and freshness. SteamWorld Dig 2 hits the mother lode with refined, addicting gameplay.
SteamWorld Dig 2 retains the original’s addictive resource-gathering gameplay, but supplements it with a gorgeously detailed, handcrafted world. Its heady mix of exploration, combat, platforming, and puzzle solving, alongside an expansive set of abilities and mods gives it plenty of variety and a great gameplay rhythm. I wish there was more to do once the campaign ends, but that’s a testament to the fact that what is here is just about pitch perfect.
When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.
The original SteamWorld Dig was defined by its rewarding progression loop, fun exploration, and steam-powered cast. As a mining robot, your job was to excavate resources, then spend the money on items and abilities to make you even better at excavating resources. That simple, addictive formula still applies to SteamWorld Dig 2, but developer Image & Form Games has tightened the screws and polished the chassis, resulting in a sequel that feels like an upgrade in every way.
While in docked mode, I ran into no issues and the game looked good. In handheld mode, it also ran smooth and handled fine. Honestly, if you are thinking about playing just a little bit before bed, you might just want to leave it in the dock. I found myself sticking around for one more dig while playing in bed.
A 3DS classic gets a follow-up that doubles down on the charm.
