Star Ocean: The Divine Force Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
If you're a fan of JRPGs or the Star Ocean series in general, then stay tuned for this Star Ocean: The Divine Force review! The Divine Force beautifully encapsulates what makes the Star Ocean series so amazing and provides a magnificently nostalgic JRPG experience. This is one ethereal installment you won't want to miss!
Star Ocean: The Divine Force is a delightful comeback for the series. When Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness released six years ago the reception was so underwhelming that even the [...]
As the sixth main installment in a JRPG series that dates to the 16-bit era, one with a slightly tarnished reputation in recent years, Star Ocean: The Divine Force evokes a comforting sense of familiarity even as it experiments with some of its expected returning elements and pushes in exciting new directions. There’s a lot of ground to cover, and Tri-Ace has done a wonderful job of crafting a new world long-time fans and newcomers alike may feel reluctant to leave once the credits roll, even keeping in mind a few rough patches they encountered along the way. That’s no minor achievement, and m...
The voice acting and music in The Divine Force are of high quality, as I felt none of the major voices seemed out of place or poorly directed. There are a few tracks that truly stood out, with the main boss battle theme, in particular, exuding an excitement that gets you totally ready to cleave up a menacing foe.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force delivers fast paced combat and a great setting that allows it to tell an engrossing tale but a number of visual choices heavily damper the experience.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force isn't the best JRPG of the year, but it's still full of heart, charm, and an unforgettable adventure. The game might have some lifeless character models and slightly janky AI, but the script brings those characters to life, and the AI is easy to ignore when the rest of the gameplay experience is so refreshing. This is the kind of fresh and fun Star Ocean sequel that long-time fans have deserved.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force is a throwback to the PS2-era, but that's part of what makes it fun.
Star Ocean's 25th-anniversary title celebrates its beloved PS2 classic with a spiritual remake, but its adherence to archaic series’ design will ward off new players.
The Star Ocean series has become something of a black sheep among JRPG franchises. In recent times it has lacked the budget, ideas and execution to compete
Star Ocean has returned with its latest entry, Star Ocean: The Divine Force. While there are attempts to evolve the series, they bring their own issues that hold back some of its good ideas.
Star Ocean is a franchise that I’ve been interested in trying out but never really got the chance. A cult JRPG from TriAce and Square Enix has had its ups and downs over the years, peaking on the PS1 but becoming less and less revered with the passage of time. Still, it has managed to survive over the years, with new titles coming out at a somewhat steady pace, despite their mid-at-best reception. My introduction to the series ended up being with Star Ocean: The Divine Force, and to be fair...
It feels enormously under-invested in, unfortunately.
