Still, the developer deserves props for doing something genuinely interesting in a staid genre. Shadows: Awakening is familiar enough, but it has some enjoyably unique mechanics that help to elevate it, and a world to explore that’s genuinely captivating. It would be great to see the developer get a chance to do more with this franchise.

The concept of an action RPG where you can shift between worlds is definitely promising. With that said, does Shadows: Awakening offer a worthwhile soul-stealing adventure?

It’s rather unfortunate that Shadows Awakening has one of the most generic video game titles ever conceived. Equally as unfortunate is that on first glance,

We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.

Shadows: Awakening ultimately fails to be the action RPG that fans of the genre need. It has some interesting ideas and decent writing, but the story shifts to the backburner after a while and the side missions and combat aren’t enough to maintain interest through the grind it turns into. It’s not bad, it’s just not particularly inspiring either. If you need a new diablo-like and a lack of polish or a glut of grind doesn’t bother you, there are definitely worse options out there.

Shadows: Awakening doesn't do much that is new or interesting, but it does achieve a mostly enjoyable ARPG experience that will appeal to diehard fans of the genre.

Shadows: Awakening’s very existence is a bit of a surprise. Back in 2014, developer Games Farm released Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms, a Diablo-style action-RPG that was supposed to be released in two installments. Unfortunately, Heretic Kingdom’s promised “Book 2” finale never materialized. After years of waiting, many weary fans accepted the story would never be completed.

Shadows Awakening does so much well. It uses a great art style, and a range of creatively designed characters. The dynamic between the Shadow Realm and mortal realm is a fantastic idea and offers a striking difference in gameplay. Sadly, a tedious story combined with finicky menus and dull characters means that Shadows Awakening doesn’t fully wake up to its potential. It’s a decent RPG with some new ideas, but it’s not going to set your world on fire.

Shadows: Awakening is a very ambitious action RPG that has a huge cast of playable characters called puppets and they will be absorbed into a demon called the Devourer and used to complete a goal set forth by a mage named Krenze, a man with a hidden agenda.

Shadows: Awakening follows the Diablo script: Journey to a hub, go through the hub and do all the quests and find out what’s going on, beat up monsters, kill them and take their loot. The environments are pleasantly destructible, with barrels and sarcophagi and all sorts of other things to destroy. As in Diablo, it’s a good idea to smash everything you can because it’s full of silver, and then explore every last nook and cranny for secrets.
