I’m not sure why Square Enix has decided to become so prolific with the SaGa property. Three games in a single 12-month timespan is the most ambitious release schedule we’ve ever seen for it. But I’m also not complaining. SaGa has always been something of the forgotten child of Square Enix’s JRPG properties. With any luck, that’s changing now, and a whole bunch of people are going to realise just how good Frontier 2 here is for the first time.
SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is an absolute must-play for JRPG fans and everyone who loves intricate storylines. Despite a steep learning curve, this remaster offers the finest opportunity to see one of Square's most artistically complex works.
SaGa Frontier 2 tells an ambitious, generational story that involves two major familial lines over the years and the way a mysterious object intertwines these stories. Originally a little bit of a messier experience, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered smoothes out some of the rougher edges and adds some greatly appreciated quality of life aspects while also slapping a nice coat of paint on its beautiful watercolor art.

It’s a great time to be into SaGa. Kawazu’s team has been able to build on the success of some risky remasters, all the way to making a brand-new game and a full remake that has helped solidify SaGa as one of Square Enix’s secret weapons. As such, SaGa Frontier 2: Remastered was seen as the perfect time to try a “shadow drop,” and see how the RPG community reacts. I hope it does well, because not only is a new SaGa always a good time, but this remaster is a beautiful example of how an older game can be preserved and refined at the same time.

Though not everyone will feel the love with this remaster considering its notorious difficulty, SaGa Frontier 2 maintains a special place in the genre for its unique combat, storytelling, and incredible art style. It's just a shame it can be such a brutally difficult game.
