River City Girls 2 is the dictionary definition of a great sequel. That is to say, it takes pretty much everything that worked in the original and builds on
Back in 2019, I was bombarded by the boundless praise of River City Girls. Back then, I knew nothing about the franchise, but the hype surrounding me was too much to dismiss. Hell, it’s the very reason I jumped on LimitedrunGames website to pre-order the physical edition – I took a wild leap of faith in an unknown commodity. As minutes became hours, hours became days, and days became months, it finally came. I actually completely forgot it was even coming since it just took forever to arr...
It's been a few years yet WayForward's delightful spin-off is back thanks to River City Girls 2 and it's a fittingly fun-filled sequel.
So, to use some old video game magazine review lingo, River City Girls fans rejoice! If you liked River City Girls, you’ll probably like River City Girls 2. It’s mostly the same thing, just way more of it. The new characters are fun, the city is much larger, there are way more quests, and the story has higher stakes. The minigames are a great new addition, boss fights are tough but fun, and oh man, that soundtrack.
River City Girls 2 is a solid beat ’em up on account of both its aesthetic and its gameplay. While it’s hampered by some elements of its combat not being as clear or precise as I’d hoped, the overall atmosphere and experience of playing the game are quite fun.
River City Girls 2 not only is a sequel done right, but the gameplay changes make it feel like a traditional beat-em-up title that is more addictive than ever to play.
River City is in danger once again, as the Sabu family is back. Sanwakai patriarch Sabu and his son Ken are here to back up Sabuko and crush the town that the River City Girls just liberated. Kyoko, Misako, Kunio, and Riki will need some help if they want to kick the gangsters out for good. PC version reviewed.
It’s safe to say that if you were a fan of River City Girls, you’re going to love River City Girls 2. But with that, there’s nothing here that is likely to draw in new fans. It’s very much an incremental improvement and expansion of the first. There are more characters, more moves, more locations, more… everything. And with the series’ typically strong presentation, those who get absorbed in the adventure on offer here will have an absolute blast whether they play alone or in co-op.
If you're a fan of beat em up games and the first River City game you'll most likely enjoy River City Girls 2 and all if not, you will still enjoy the game if you can ignore its few annoyances.
River City Girls 2 is an entry in the knuckle-busting beat-'em-up franchise.
It’s a little disappointing, and really quite surprising, that River City Girls 2 shows very little impetus to improve on its promising predecessor. The girls have still definitely ‘got it,’ and still make this colourful and characterful journey worth it through some rough patches, but there’s a little too much reliance on the assets of the original to make it feel worth the rather steep asking price. The original game made a fan of me, while the sequel just about manages to sustain my loyalty, though that will definitely be affected by how WayForward deal with its woeful frame rate issue in the coming weeks.
Kyoko and Misako are back and are still as questionable as ever! But is this second outing worth the trip back to River City?
A much more modern and enjoyable beat 'em up than its predecessor, River City Girls 2 does almost everything right. Despite that, its performance issues get in the way of the fun.

This is definitely a title I strongly recommend to anybody looking for a new fighting, RPG-style beat ‘em up, whether to play with a friend or run solo!
