Professional reviews from gaming critics
All of that said, Q.U.B.E. is a fun game that presents a lot of challenge and reward in its few hours of gameplay. And if the 2-3 hour campaign sounds a bit short, don’t be concerned. There are other modes to play – including a time challenge mode that is unlocked upon completion that adds even more trickiness to some of the puzzles. The game manages to be fresh throughout the entire experience, and avoids the pitfalls of becoming repetitive at every turn. Q.U.B.E. is a must play for puzzle enthusiasts, and for anyone who is looking for a fun challenge.
Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut is an excellent physics based puzzler that offers enough variety and challenge to its puzzles to satisfy even the most lateral of thinkers. Obvious comparisons will be made to the Portal franchise but for players who never played those games it offers a fresh, new dimension to physics based puzzling and in terms of the story, it offers an altogether more mature and serious narrative throughout. At the price, it's a must-have for any puzzle fan.

The striking visual style pairs very well with the story telling. The silent protagonist awakes in a room where the walls, floors, ceilings are all made of white and gray cubes. These cubes transform and move in a variety of different ways to form staircases, elevator platforms and ultimately the base for all puzzles. The stark contrast between the white cubes and the colored cubes make identifying a puzzle simple, yet immersive.
The music and voice acting is great and the puzzles clever. Glitches in the physics and difficulties in working camera angles and timing elements into puzzle solving definitely detracts from the experience though.
Director cuts to me are always the final intended product. It’s the final vision of how the game was meant to be played and looking back at the original Q.U.B.E., the changes have been great, adding the story would be by far the biggest. Yet, no matter how strong the writing is, or what it makes you feel, it’s ruined by those final few minutes at the end of the game. It felt as if the whole experience, whilst rather short, left me in an inconsequential role, like I was simply listening to an argument between two people in an elevator.
Q.U.B.E. Director's Cut doesn't bring any additional "new" features to the table (aside from the time trials, voice work, and fantastic score), but the original product's core gameplay still shines on its own. The game's narrative is suspenseful and the puzzles are fantastic brainteasers. For just $9.99, the puzzle platformer is well worth the 2GB it will take up on your system.
Q.U.B.E Director’s Cut is a very good puzzle game that incorporates a decent story that keeps you guessing right until the very end. The minimalist design throughout the game allows the puzzles to stand out, and nothing feels wasted. Toxic Games have created quite a memorable experience with this game. There is some issue with the final portion of the game with a couple of spikes in difficulty, but overall Q.U.B.E Director’s Cut is a fun and accessible title that offers a fair challenge. If you’re into puzzle platformers then you should strongly consider picking this up.
