The original Psychonauts released in 2005, and its zany art-style, on top of what seemed like a ridiculous story, didn’t catch my interest at the time. With the announcement of Psychonauts 2, I still had no plans to jump into Double Fine’s cult-hit franchise. It is surprising then that Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a virtual reality game, was the bait that has now hooked me to anything Psychonauts in the future.

Whether it’s worth playing at that price depends on how into Psychonauts you are and/or how desperate you are for a delightful, well-crafted PSVR game. I’ll say this much: as someone who is by no means a superfan, Rhombus of Ruin left me feeling proper excited for Psychonauts 2.

Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin is a remarkably enjoyable romp through some interesting and intriguing environments, with a largely enjoyable story and occasional moments of brilliance. While it lets itself down with a short run-time and a lack of variety or depth, these issues do little to detract from what is otherwise a brilliant VR debut for the Psychonauts series. Trying something slightly different while waiting for the true sequel, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is a delightful VR puzzle game that does a great job reacquainting players with the charming and creative cast of Psychonauts.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin serves as a fun side adventure, utilizing PlayStation VR to put players right into the world of the series. It does this well, with the usual excellent writing expected of Double Fine. The point-and-click gameplay is fun, and works well in VR, but the puzzles can and will stump you at some points, causing some extreme frustration. A short game, it is nonetheless worth trying out, especially if you were a fan of the original.

Despite the fact that this is a first-person VR adventure mostly devoid of the combat platforming that made the original Psychonauts so memorable, it still carries the same spirit. The wonderful writing and solid use of VR make it a fitting continuation to the series that left me pining for Psychonauts 2, especially when it ended after three hours and visiting just a handful of locations.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin marks the return of Raz, Milla, Sasha, Lilly, and the rest of the psychically gifted crew, though it’s not completely triumphant. While reentering Double Fine’s imaginative world is great, it’s disappointing as both a VR experience and a Psychonauts spinoff.

That’s a shame, because there’s a lot of potential in the Psychonauts universe for a fantastic VR game – this much is apparent even to me, despite having never played the original game. The quirky characters and outlandish locations are just begging to be explored with the kind of immersiveness that VR offers, but Rhombus of Ruin isn’t that game. If anything, it’s a game that makes me want to finally check out Psychonauts itself, but that’s due as much to what this game fails to deliver as to what it succeeds in.

With the release of Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, anyone who's fallen in love with the original Psychonauts in the past 12 years will finally get the chance to dip back into the unusual world of Razputin “Raz" Aquato and his friends. As long as you happen to own PlayStation VR that is.
