Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus takes an already fiendishly addictive arcade game and adds a fantastic multiplayer mode. At $20 it's an impulse buy for any Switch owner.
Pac-Man is back in an all-new adventure in Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus. First appearing in 1980, and appearing in a plethora of other solo games, remake
Pac-Man is one of the longest running franchises in video game history, pre-dating the likes of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Surprisingly though, there really aren’t many variations of the original Pac-Man arcade game. There’s Ms. Pac-Man, which is essentially the same game with a different maze, and then there’s Pac-Mania, which is a very similar game, but from an isometric view.
Pac-Man is one of those games that has stood the test of time because it is simplistic and incredibly fun. The Championship Edition port for the Nintendo Switch takes the fast-paced arcade style of the 2016 original and brings that fun to a new platform! Title: Pac-Man Championship Edition 2…
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus performs well on Switch, with only a few fits of noticeable slowdown while in handheld mode. The Plus 2P mode is a nice addition, but sadly lacks the content available in the main game. If you’re looking for a fun and quick distraction for a few minutes every once in a while, this game may be right up your alley.
The core of Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is good, especially with the Score Attack mode and the novel new local two-player mode. Unfortunately, the botched offline score uploading, minor technical issues, and disappointing Adventure mode drag the entire experience down. If you have friends locally to play the two-player mode or friends online to score chase with, this is a fine game, at least as long you’re always near WiFi when you get high scores. Without the well-implemented high score chases, it’s still fun, just maybe more fleeting than it could have been.
Ultimately, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is proof that bigger isn’t always better. The additional gameplay mechanics only get in the way of how fun the original was, and makes the screen a busy mess at times. The saving grace is that the Switch version of the game is perfect for short play sessions, which makes it a decent purchase for those that want Pac-Man on the go.
Our review of Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus revealed how Bandai Namco was able to take the core gameplay of Pac-Man and introduce fresh ideas making it more fun and challenging as ever.
Clearly, I’ve had a lot of fun with this Pac-Man game—more than I’ve ever had fun with Pac-Man in the past. Despite the random shouting my neighbors probably hate me for, I’m really glad I picked up this game. It’ll definitely be fun for get-togethers with friends and family.
