Nex Machina Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
May it be the likes of Shadow of the Colossus or Metal Gear Solid, if it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.
It takes a special type of high-score game for me to want to actually stick with it and start rivalries on the leaderboards. Pac-Man Championship Edition was one such game. Trials HD was another. Now, Nex Machina is my new obsession.
Housemarque is regularly lauded for its arcade sensibilities. The developer achieves a level of exactitude and seamless flow that comes only through constant design iteration, careful balance, and edge-of-your-seat gameplay that demands palm-sweating precision. The studio’s most impressive implementation of that strategy until now had been its last game, Resogun. But by borrowing many of the elements that made Resogun so rewarding and evolving the twin-stick experience, Nex Machina becomes a modern arcade masterpiece.
Taking hints from both Robotron and Smash TV, Nex Machina is an intense arcade style twin-stick shooter that focuses on pure action, voxel destruction and competition in the distant, cablepunk-themed future.
As a long time fan or a newcomer to the genre, Nex Machina is great addition to the SHMUP games list. It hits all the right notes and offers a satisfying experience. Available on both PC and PS4, this is a game I would recommend for lovers of the genre or those interested in trying out a reimagining of the classic genre.
I've always been a fan of top-down, twin-stick shooters. Games such as Smash TV and Robotron 2084, devoured quarter after quarter in my former local arcades. And then, like that, they disappeared. Sure, we got the occasional game, but for the most part, the genre was dying up and on it's way out. So image - Read our full Gaming News on The Outerhaven .
It’s safe to say that the developers at Housemarque love making twin-stick shooters. Between Super Stardust, Alienation, and Resogun, it’s hard not see them as the top dogs in their niche, crafting and iterating upon genre masterpieces that actually get better with age. It should come as no surprise then that their latest entry, Nex Machina is an utter delight. It surpasses their previous efforts and could very well be the pinnacle of what the genre can achieve.
Focused, intense and hugely replayable, Nex Machina is the best twin-stick shooter in ages.
A fantastic twin stick shooter with tight gameplay, great visuals, and an awesome soundtrack
Nex Machina is the latest offering of twin-stick shooting mayhem from genre masters Housemarque. Are you fast enough to take on one of their toughest games to date?
Finnish studio Housemarque have produced in Nex Machina another game to sit alongside its well-received titles of Alienation and Resogun, and that showcases the serious pedigree it has built since their start in the early nineties with Stardust. It is a rush of colour that delivers a satisfying experience that’ll steal your calm and let you imagine a future where the robots don’t wipe us all out.
There will be more twin-stick shooters, probably excellent ones, but if time stopped and all we were left with was Nex Machina, then that wouldn’t be such a terrible thing. Housemarque and Eugene Jarvis have created something very special, and I suspect, enduring.
