Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars

Working with a clearly limited budget, Tamsoft has focused on delivering a tight action-combat system, while also relying on the fan service of both Senran Kagura and Hyperdimension Neptunia to see it through. It’s a good couple of hours of genuine fun, with the requisite bath scenes, humour and familiar characters to meet and fight. You can’t help but think that both properties could have grown to become more than this, but taking as it is, it’s still entertaining nonsense, with a heavy emphasis on the “entertaining”. I play enough serious games that require deep analysis, this kind…

Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars is the hyper-specific and ultra-niche crossover game I never thought I'd get. It's a delight to see the Senran Kagura crew after so long, and it's a blast to see the Neptunia girls in what is easily the most fun and satisfying to play spinoff in the series. The lack of extra features and watered down story leave something to be desired, but if this is the first of many games, then it's a promising new direction for both series.

Each new Neptunia game brings something exciting to Gamindustri and now, the cast meets SENRAN KAGURA for some ninja action.

When I first booted up Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars, I was immediately hit with the guilty pleasure feeling. It was an immediate “Oh no, I hope no one catches me playing this” plus a bit of excitement. After previewing the first couple of chapters, I can say that this was a guilty pleasure turned pleasure. It wasn’t as risque or PG as I was expecting, nor was the amount of moe unbearable. The first few chapters were a little more fanservice-y than the rest of the game, which made sense since the plot thickens later on. Overall, the level of fanservice was mild but welcome. Of course, t...

Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars succeeds at being a fun crossover and a decent enough game to play. It’s solid enough to satisfy fans and newbies alike, has a solid gameplay foundation, and isn’t afraid to let loose when the time calls for it. There’s enough here to keep you busy, and everything involved is at least competent enough to keep your attention. So long as you aren’t expecting Game of the Year material, you’ll find yourself having fun with this one. If your aim is t...

This crossover will please fans of both series, but accomplishes little else.

Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars is the highly specific crossover that fans will enjoy with a familiar cast, great interactions, and humor but lacks depth and content outside of its solid combat.

Tragically, no, but not due to lack of interest. There are two matching bunny girl figures (of Yumi and Yozakura) but pricing for figures of all scales has exploded in the last few years. We're talking $300+ for the pre-order. If you miss that, the aftermarket price is completely unreasonable.

If the idea of sitting through up to an hour of pointless chit-chat before you can get into a bout of entertaining action doesn’t put you off, then you might get some enjoyment out of Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars. It’s not a bad game by any means, but it doesn’t strike a good balance between story and gameplay. And the story itself isn’t worthy of taking up so much of your time. Still, as Switch ports go this is a good one, and the additional difficulty options are very welcome.

Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars is a crossover action RPG where, once enemies, the nations of Heartland and Marveland must forces to defeat the invading mechanical ninja army!

There is so much potential in a crossover between the Neptunia and Senran Kagura series that it’s a real disappointment this is the best Tamsoft, Compile Heart, and Idea Factory have to offer. What should have been a celebration of two niche franchises that have defied the odds (and critics) to succeed in this industry is instead yet another forgettable spinoff for two series that have already seen their fair share of forgettable spinoffs. Both franchises deserve better, and quite frankly, so do the fans who have done their part to keep them going.

Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars is full of fanservice and anime girls with big boobs, but not much more. Insanely long visual novel talk segments, and the story is so silly there’s not much motivation to keep playing.
