MultiVersus shows there's enough promise to expand the platform fighter genre with a new focus on 2v2 gameplay and intriguing movesets for each character. We didn't call Mortal Kombat a Street Fighter clone, despite them sharing a 2D plane. Nintendo didn't even begin the platform fighter genre: it only popularized it. The term "Smash Clone" is a demeaning one, which is a huge turnoff for many. MultiVersus should get love for its concept, and as it continues to build, hopefully it will get its time in the sun.

MultiVersus is a fantastic foundation for a great platform that will only grow with time. It combines a solid fighting system with an excellent starting roster of characters to offer a platforming fighter like no other. There are some kinks to be ironed out, but MultiVersus is in a prime position to hit the ground running.

The Battle Pass for MultiVersus follows a pretty standard format for live-service games, with challenges for players to complete to earn in-game rewards. There are free tiers that are automatically available for everyone, but in order to get the most out of the Seasonal experience, there are premium tiers available for purchase. According to the Multiversus FAQ page, "items earned from a MultiVersus Battle Pass are not exclusive. There may be opportunities to earn some of these items in the game at a later date," which gives hope for those who need to watch their budget, even if there is a cov...

MultiVersus still has a ways to go, but it's already the closest thing to a rival that Smash has ever seen.

The concept of Multiversus is spectacular. Take characters from Warner Bros. owned franchises, like DC Comics, Looney Toons, and more, and pit them against

Despite its open beta falling by the wayside, MultiVersus had a ton of potential heading into its full launch. While the netcode, characters and gameplay feel solid, everything else needs extensive improvements.

MultiVersus has got to be the textbook example of how even the most recognizable properties don't guarantee the success of a live service game. Launched in open beta back in July 2022, complete with microtransactions, the platform fighter developed by Player First Game was abruptly taken down the following year. While the dwindling number of players since launch may have played a part in taking the game offline, the developer assured that MultiVersus would be coming back in 2024 better than ever with a lot of changes based on player feedback.

Characterful fighters, a good skill ceiling, and a co-op emphasis with real depth makes Warner Bros. MultiVersus a very pleasant surprise.

Sep 7, 2022

MultiVersus manages to carve a distinct section of the newly booming platform fighter genre out for itself using some of the biggest fictional names on the planet. The game’s lineup, consisting of cartoon royalty like Bugs Bunny appearing alongside contemporary favorites like Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, is quite telling of how deep WB’s bench can go and how weird the game is willing to get. Over time its roster could easily become a spectacle on par with what Nintendo’s mascot fighter has to offer, and if it can improve the fluff around its solid core, it could very well garner equal leve...
