Legacy of Kain: Ascendance Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Legacy of Kain: Ascendance isn’t that bad of a game. But it’s also likely not what fans were waiting for. Having three characters to play through twelve levels sounds good. But all three play similarly and they aren’t evenly featured—with Kain only playable once or twice. Legacy of Kain: Ascendace is okay. But longtime fans will be left still waiting for the next big game in the series.
Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a decent new addition to the franchise after 23 years. It tries to breathe life into the franchise, but it makes only a bare minimum attempt. Though the voice work and soundtrack are the standouts here, the action and platforming suffer from bad level design and bad enemy AI. Even the game's story suffers from simple and mediocre writing, something that was once a standout for the franchise.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is every bit as cringy as most fan fiction stories go, especially ones where the author injects a new character of their own and makes them pivotal to the backstory of well-established characters, thus reconstructing the lore to suit the author's needs.
There’s very little to redeem Legacy of Kain: Ascendance other than the fact that it’s short.
Sometimes memories are best left as memories. Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a perfect example of why fans shouldn't be allowed to revisit long-dormant game series.
The Legacy of Kain series has had somewhat of a resurgence lately, with three big HD remakes and a series of rereleases on multiple platforms, a kickstarted TTRPG and encyclopedia, and even a new comic. So it’s disappointing to see the first new game in the series, like Ascendance, feel so lackluster, short, and boring.
