Layers of Fear 2 is one heck of a horror thriller. Like Layers of Fear before it, this walking simulator / puzzle-lite game takes players on a longer trip with insanity this time around. While the doomed ocean liner setting doesn’t quite give Layers 2 the artistic licence to be as brazenly bonkers as its predecessor, it finds other ways to drop the “holy crap” moments in your lap.
Although less scary than the previous game, Layer of Fear 2 is a beautiful but chilling game with wonderful writing and voice-acting. It maintains pieces of the first game that many loved while changing enough so that it doesn't feel repetitive.
Layers of Fear 2 is a psychological horror game that will mesmerize you. Our review...
Carried by hauntingly beautiful writing and an unsettling atmosphere, Layers of Fear 2 is one of the most stunning horror games of this generation. Using classic film and a descent into madness as its anchor, its rich ocean liner setting changes at every turn, producing constant unease in just the right way. With unique puzzles and expert pacing, Layers of Fear 2 is a harrowing and consistently exciting endeavor.
Layers of Fear 2 is an abstract, slow burn psychological thriller that strings you along with increasingly skilled and disturbing imagery, then leaves you shaking and looking over your shoulder.
Layers of Fear 2 definitely holds up to its name. You play as an actor who is about to start your next project. But before you are able to, your director wants you to explore your role and get into character. But are you researching a role or your own hidden past?Read More
Layers of Fear 2 is a fascinating horror game that centers on exploring a mysterious ship and its ever-changing layout. It isn't the scariest game, but the unsettling nature of everything you encounter more than makes up for it. The constant environmental changes designed to mess with you are amazing and one of the best aspects.
I did really enjoy the breaks in-between story to see things happening from the Writer’s POV, though at some point we seemed to have jumped forward a chunk of time and missed out on a lot of context. Another mystery to be solved by notes and journal entries scattered around the lighthouse the Writer inhabits. While I didn’t have enough time to go through the Actor’s story, I am nonetheless looking forward to diving back into that world as it was originally my favorite! If it anything li...

When you think of Nintendo’s humble, family-friendly Switch, quality horror games don't immediately spring to mind. It has decent ports of Outlast, Amnesia
All in all, Layers of Fear 2 has its flaws but stands out as an improvement over the original, which was still one of the scariest games on PS4 and Xbox One. The sequel's mechanics are the same as the first one: there's no combat, puzzles are sometimes obtusely perplexing, and the control scheme can be somewhat clunky. Yet, the criticisms that the first one was heavily reliant upon age-old gimmicks, cheap deaths, and general mediocrity do not hold water with Layers of Fear 2. It is nothing ground-breaking, but it is a unique horror game that can be easily recommended for lovers of the genre.
Layers of Fear (2023) is a solid compilation of two decent horror titles. It is a massive graphical upgrade that uses a new narrative to tie them together in a satisfying way. Releasing at $30 MSRP if you haven’t played the games before and love to get creeped out then this one is well worth checking out.
Artistic pursuit in something that must not be taken lightly. An artist pours all of his heart and soul into his or her creation, and this act may bring to light things that are better left in the dark. Some, however, aim to see how far they can go in the pursuit of artistic perfection, unleashing unspeakable horror not only on the world but on themselves as well. This is the story of the actor who stars in Layers of Fear 2.
In our Layers of Fear (2023) review, learn whether Bloober Team's latest is a thrilling scare or disappointing snooze.
Though it is not without its fair share of flaws, the revamped Layers of Fear contains everything that fans enjoyed about the original series and elevates them with improved visuals and new gameplay mechanics that help alleviate some of the monotony. The writer’s story offers an intriguing through-line that sensibly ties together each narrative thread. Technical hiccups aside, Layers of Fear wraps up the series in a graphically enhanced package that is easily the best way for players both new and old to experience the franchise.
Layers of Fear 2 is an enjoyable experience, if a bit flawed. There’s not a single part I didn’t enjoy, but neither is there any section that avoided serious criticism. As a relatively cheap game, I’d say definitely pick it up if you’re a fan of spooks and scares, but don’t expect it to especially move you or last more than a few days.
Virtual Reality is both perfect for horror games and uniquely unsuited for the genre. You’re immediately immersed, with every stray noise and light flicker raising your heart rate. On the other hand, technical limitations can quickly pull you out of the simulation, reminding you that everything is going to be fine after all. Layers of Fear VR does its best to skirt these hurdles, stumbling on certain hard limits while easily spiking your adrenaline from the jump. While I swung from scared to annoyed quite regularly, the experience ultimately scratches that horror itch.
Layers of Fear was a surprise from Bloober Team, a developer with quite the history. Needless to say, nobody expected them come out with a first-person psychological horror title after their psuedo-horror Bomberman clone (and all of the drama surrounding that development). The first Layers of Fear dove into the deranged mind of an artist as he spiraled out of control and into madness. The sequel plays up that idea, this time peeling back the layers in the mental state of an actor as he explores his past, present, and potential futures.
If I could, I would score Layers of Fear 2 somewhere between Null and Infinity, but I can't, and as everyone is going to have a different view on Layers of Fear 2 the score is pretty much irrelevant. If you know your films and consider yourself reasonably intelligent then I would recommend at least taking a look at Layers of Fear 2. I *think* I enjoyed it, but I honestly couldn't promise that you or anyone else would. What an odd curio of a game.
When I started Layers of Fear 2, I was thrust into what looked like a hotel corridor that was flooding. Where was I? Did I miss something important? But then I picked up a mirror and received my first jump scare.
Bloober Team is a studio that knows a thing or two about the spectrum of opinion. After launching its 2016 hit Layers of Fear, the Polish developer fell well wide of the mark a year later with its own version of cyberpunk. We didn’t take to Observer in the slightest, but fast-track two years and the team is returning to what put it on the map. Layers of Fear 2 is a grander and more boisterous sequel, hampered only somewhat by its lack of genuine scares.
Layers of Fear 2 ups the ante from the original game's haunted house simulator style of horror, but that still leaves it all feeling too scripted to instill any real sense of dread.
Set on a desolate ship, Layers of Fear 2 relies on the claustrophobic, ever-changing environments to keep players in the dark, never knowing what horror to expect around every corner and through every door.
An atmosphere which is not that spooky or terrifying but... quite strange, disturbing, literally "creepy." Layers of Fear 2 is not the Polish P. T., but a Polish TP. “T” for Twin, and “P” for Peaks.
Layers of Fear (2023) does a good job of leaving the core of the original and sequel intact but with major graphical issues and a bland additional story doesn't quite reach the new elevated status it was hoping for. The games on their own still hold up relatively well.
In horror, mystery and uncertainty are useful tools. However, when properly deployed, knowledge and context have even more power to transform simple scares into pure terror. Imagine you’re walking through a haunted house. Doors spring open every few steps, each one hiding a faceless corpse, and in the background you can vaguely hear the singing of a creepy voice. That’s pretty scary. Now imagine that all of those faceless corpses are replaced by the bodies of your friends and family, and the creepy singing is the voice of your first-grade teacher. Suddenly, your personal investment makes predictable horror elements compelling and chilling. This is a lesson Layers of Fear 2 never learns. It may excel at jolting you with quick scares, but the narrative and stakes are so obscure that real horror can’t take root.
Heavy on references and old-style scares, this sequel lacks its own horror identity.
A slightly insipid follow-up, Layers of Fear 2 attempts something more ambitious than the first game, but disappointingly fails to stick the landing.
Short on puzzles and scares, Layers of Fear 2 ultimately feels like an overly dark walking simulator. You’ll have covered a fair bit of ground by the time you reach the credits, and avoided some pretty unusual hazards, but the unfair deaths you’ll have suffered along along the way will leave a bad taste in your mouth. And the game’s story doesn’t quite pay off, either. Layers of Fear 2 is a swing and a miss for Bloober Team in my eyes, unfortunately. I just hope it can come back and hit the ball out of the park with its next release.
Credit must go to Bloober Team for setting a different course for its sequel; it's just a shame that it didn't bring the chills and scares that littered the last outing.
Layers of Fear 2 has some mildly redeeming qualities, but there are too many better horror games available to waste your time and money on something that requires you to dig so hard for fun.
I enjoyed the snippets of dialogue from the past and I loved my growing unease as the pieces started to come together, but the ending just left me underwhelmed. Layers of Fear 2 might have fixed the biggest criticism I had of the original, but it ended up less compelling overall.
Layers of Fear 2 has you take on the role of an actor who has been invited onto a ship to get prepped and ready for the role they are about to take on. The story itself can often get a bit confusing as it jumps from the story of the actor to a young boy and girl playing pirates aboard the ship.
