Islets Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Overall, Islets may not be doing anything especially new in its genre, but it does all the usual things incredibly well. Movement and combat feel good, the abilities you get are fun to use, maps are well designed and satisfying to explore, and bosses are challenging in a way that makes them memorable. Outside of some qualms with how upgrade tokens sometimes make rewards not as worthwhile as they should be, I have very little negative to say about my time with Islets. Metroidvanias are the purest form of video games. Most games have some sort of progress track, a sense of exploration, and gameplay loops that indicate you’ve grown in strength. But despite a strong foundational idea, good Metroidvanias, really good ones that can create a sense of atmosphere, are rarer than you may think. Islets is a special game. The second game from solo developer Kyle Thompson, Islets will surely scratch that itch.
The Thompson Brothers knock it out of the park with their second game. Islets has you playing as an ordinary mouse on a quest to reunite the world. Many have tried and failed – will you prevail unlike the others? With a great mixture of enjoyable exploration, combat and aesthetics, this is another one not to miss.
Sometimes, a Metroidvania doesn't offer much new but it does everything so well that it's still a must-play so here's the excellent Islets.
“We’ve got Hollow Knight at home” never sounded so appealing.
Islets is a thoroughly charming and straightforward Metroidvania. Every moment provides a laid-back atmosphere through its humorous dialogue and adorable visual designs. These work in tandem while the tight controls and creative platforming make for a game that’s easy to put long play sessions into.
Islets serves up some of the tightest platforming seen in recent years but drops the ball when it comes to combat.
