Frozen Synapse 2 Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Frozen Synapse 2 is an almost instantly recommendable game, with some of the most tense, tactical gameplay you can find online. Unfortunately, its single player experience isn’t as much fun as the hugely thrilling multiplayer experience.
Frozen Synapse 2's combat will keep pulling you back in, and the open world is a fun sandbox that looks and sounds fantastic. The turtling A.I. is still a pain, though.
It's always worth double-checking in this excellent strategy game.
If you have a strategy itch, Frozen Synapse 2 is a great way to scratch it. There are some obvious comparisons to be made to the excellent XCom series, and that is great company to be keeping, but Frozen Synapse 2 still manages to to be its own unique experience as well. The neon drenched cyberpunk presentation is entertaining, but the tactics are where the bulk of the fun is going to be had. There is room to improve the pacing and interface and help streamline the experience, but it is great to see Frozen Synapse back.
Frozen Synapse 2 is a welcome return to the intensely micromanaged turn-based tactical battles that made the original so compelling. The asynchronous multiplayer is unquestionably the star of the show, and queuing up multiple online games at once means you’re never stuck waiting for an opponent, and that you can play at your own pace. But while the new City Game story mode is conceptually interesting, in practice the largely scripted sequence of story missions doesn’t allow for much in the way of meaningful gameplay depth.
There might be some faults throughout but they don't stop Frozen Synapse 2 from being a solid sequel that is worth your time.
A tale of two games, Frozen Synapse 2 is best when you’re battling it out like you did in the original. Thankfully, that’s a large portion of what you’re doing in this game.
I’ve listed a lot of niggling complaints with Frozen Synapse 2, but that’s mainly because there’s honestly not that many ways to say how fantastic in both premise and execution its core concept is, and how well its game modes showcase it. It’s still very much an involved strategy game, and not one that transcends its genre enough to convert players with perpetually itchy feet and twitchy thumbs. If painstakingly planning out breaches down to the literal tenth of a second doesn’t appeal to you, you’ll want to look elsewhere. For all you really cool strategy fans, though, fill your cyberpunk boo...
