With scripted drama and F2 racing, F1 2019 tells a compelling motorsport story.

Another solid entry into the F1 franchise for Codemasters. It’s nice to see them expanding the game to represent how drivers work their way up into the F1 roster from the F2 feeder series. Being able to build your driver up from (an albeit short) F2 career really lends credence to the story of your driver making their way up through the ranks.

F1 2019 raises the bar once again for F1 games. Whilst more hardcore racers will still prefer something like iRacing or Assetto Corsa, casual players and F1 fanatics will wholeheartedly enjoy their time here, regardless of their skill level.

It's always strange to me when an annualised series comes out earlier than normal. You expect them at the same time, roughly, every year. It's even stranger when they come with more features than normal and looking like the best the series has ever been. The announcement of an earlier release date, combined with the inclusion of F2 would lead anybody to wonder about the time allotted to actually develop the game. My impressions of F1 2019 were of the positive when I previewed it around two months ago.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Formula 1, the sport, isn’t as fun nowadays as it used to be. That’s all due to its reduced number of scuderias, ugly car designs, removal of traditional racetracks in favor of street racetracks in different countries, and excessive amounts of punitive measures for anything a driver does. Not to mention Mercedes-Benz’s monopoly over the sport. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen in the realm of video games. Codemasters’ F1 games just keep g...

F1 2019 encompasses the breadth of experiences, car choices, track choices that provide a far deeper experience for the player than would be available in a generic sim. That depth truly demonstrates the complexity of not only the hardware, but the ever-changing conditions during a race.

Though I’ve never been one to necessarily gravitate towards racing simulators, there’s no denying that on first glance F1 2019 looks fantastic. Drawn in with the hope that it can only be as good as it looked, and with Codemasters promising that this game is set to be the best we’ve seen from the entire franchise, I decided to take a ride and there is absolutely no doubt that this racer is one for the books.

Accessible yet unapologetically authentic, F1 2019 is still best-in-class when it comes to the art of bringing a modern motorsport to life. However, besides some bold but mostly short-lived tweaks to the career mode and some new functionality for online racers, there’s a pretty strong sense of déjà vu here. F1 2019 is a very, very good game – the best F1 game to date – but it definitely doesn’t always seem like a new game.

Both basketball and hockey season are behind us and now we look forward to the summer and Formula One. I’m an avid listener of the Bill Burr podcast every Monday he’d break down the race for a casual fan of F1. As I listen to this podcast from week to week my interest in F1 grew. Why does Lewis Hamilton win so much? How has Mercedes won every freaking race so far this season? More importantly, do simulation F1 video games hold up to their real life counterparts?

The first few moments of F1 2019 suggest that we’re in for a drastically different experience this year. Before you even get your hands on a Formula 1 steering wheel, you’re thrown into the world of F2, a second division of sorts that acts as a feeder system for the premier racing world.

While F1 2019 adds features from the all-time bucket list of many an F1 fan, these new additions aren’t quite fully formed yet. This still managed to be the best Formula 1 game by Codemasters to date – the handling of the F2 cars and new online modes are genre defining – but there is always scope for further improvements and some areas are now beginning to feel a little stale. Video gamers can be so demanding sometimes.
