Professional reviews from gaming critics
Dune Awakening is an ambitious survival crafting sandbox set on one of the most famously oppressive places in science fiction, the planet Arrakis, also known as Dune from Frank Herbert’s series of the same name that started in 1965 and spans 6 huge books in the original Dune series. Developer Funcom has games like Conan Exiles under its belt, but is Dune Awakening unique enough to stand out in a genre that is growing more saturated by the day? Short answer: This one is one of the best games...
Dune: Awakening (Xbox Series X/S) Review – 8.5/10: Dune: Awakening succeeds in making players feel like everyone is out to get them, all while encouraging you to rise to the occasion and come out the other end stronger. - Game Informer
In our Dune: Awakening PS5 review we find a supremely confident take on Frank Herbert's opus which deftly combines survival, MMO and RPG elements with verve.
The Dune: Awakening console launch is exciting. The console experience largely matches what players have on PC, but its single-player mode also opens the door to more players who want to play alone without sacrificing quality for them or the game’s existing multiplayer base.
Dune:Awakening does a phenomenal job of making Arrakis come to life, from the oppressing heat and sand as far as the eye can see, to the terrifying encounters with Shai Halud. Once you get your feet under you, the game has dozens of hours of exploration and content to work through, making it a very enjoyable experience. We review Dune: Awakening on PS5 Pro. The single-player mode is particularly impressive.
Create your own hero and embark on a journey in search of the Fremen, alone or with allies.
Dune: Awakening is Funcom's best game yet, both in terms of gameplay and technically. They do a fantastic job of making the player feel like they are scrapping by living on Arrakis.
So insofar as I’m ever going to spend time playing survival games, Dune: Awakening will be my go-to. I acknowledge that I’m a purist as far as Dune goes, and I was never going to get along with an “alternate timeline” that largely misses the point of what Herbert was saying with his novel, but once I get past that resistance and my inherent distaste for the formula of survival games, I actually found myself enjoying this one. It’s like the rare time I find an FPS that I actually like, and that’s actually kind of impressive.
Playing Dune: Awakening is an uneven experience. The survival and building loops start strong, then eventually bog down, but experiencing the Dune universe and Arrakis is always engaging. If the game’s combat could reach the heights of its stellar world-building, Dune: Awakening would be very hard to put down. As it is, the game’s crafting/survival loops are just strong enough to keep me playing when its combat tempts me to stop.
Funcom's survival MMO delivers on the fantasy of the Dune universe but stumbles in the endgame.
