Dreamscaper is an excellent game. It goes up just under Hades for me as one of the best examples of the genre. Having it release day one into Game Pass this is a game you should give a try if it appeals at all to you. Solid gameplay, excellent build diversity, charming graphics, and a heartfelt story combine to make something wonderful that should be experienced by as many people as possible.

I had the pleasure of playing Dreamscaper from Afterburner Studios during this year’s E3. It feels similar to Hades (which is its closest point of comparison), as it’s a roguelite, with an overarching story that continues even after you fail a run. This was one of the things that I loved most about Hades, so it’s great to see another game follow in those footsteps.

As Cassidy, your goal is to conquer the nightmares that plague your dreams. To this end, you employ everything from pool cues, yo-yos, finger guns, and magic bows to complete your adventure against strange nightmares and ghoulish bosses. An excellent combat system creates a flow that has you zipping from monster to monster. Secrets and unlocks await around every corner. Some smart choices – like letting players teleport to rooms they have already discovered instead of walking – add some welcome convenience to the roguelike dungeon crawl.

Dreamscaper really is rather good; this is a game that certainly deserves more attention than it’s received. What it lacks in originality, it makes up for in heart. A surprisingly emotional story, rewarding progression system, snappy combat, and painterly visuals make for an experience that we’d suggest you give a serious look.

As it stands Dreamscaper is a chill game that is easy to sink more time into than you’d expect from something that just hit Early Access. Despite some rough edges, it holds its own against other big name rogue-lite ARPGs like, the soon to be released, Hades, and there is still plenty that could be added. Dreamscaper is currently €18.49/$19.99 on Steam and it is full of potential.
