Dragon Quest Builders

bySquare Enix Business Division 5•2016

"Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox action RPG where your imagination is the limit! Everything plays out in real time and the world is made entirely of blocks (although it may not look that blocky) and you can use these blocks to build pretty much whatever you want. Building is easy and can be done in three steps: 1. Plan what you’re going to buil...

This latest Dragon Quest spin-off is heavily inspired by the popularity of Minecraft. However, does it do enough to entice players who aren't as interested in the open-world block-building genre?

I’ll be the first to say that I have a big apprehension when it comes to crafting in games. More than once, I’ve sworn off crafting mechanics when they creep into my favorite franchises (which they keep doing). It’s not that I have anything against crafting, in general, I just…

Both classic Dragon Quest RPG and Minecraft-style building sim, Dragon Quest Builders takes just enough ingredients from each side of the developmental kitchen and gently stirs them into a dish that never manages to overpower either of its core mechanics. If you’ve ever wanted to try Mojang’s ubiquitous hit but found it a little too intimidating in its vagueness, then this is the alternative for you. Fun, empowering and Dragon Quest to a tee; Its combat and camera can be a little erratic, but they never manage to derail your new building adventure.

Dragon Quest Builders as a package is all kinds of fun. The way you build up towns and explore the worlds is a true time sink for many hours. I found myself constantly looking for materials, quests, or items to push towards a 100% completion. That doesn't mean everything is grand, mind you. The lack of significant updates to the camera or bosses left me sour more than I would like to admit. These problems can be forgiven in time, but the smaller chapters constantly offer clear reminders of the problems. The Switch version offers little in the way of notable exclusive content, but playing it in...

A huge component missing from this game was multiplayer. Granted, this game benefited from focusing on a single player campaign, It can’t help but be felt like a major part of this game is missing by not letting 2 people work together to create something. One of the major reasons Minecraft is so successful is that anything is possible since people can work together to create anything they can think of. It seems like for now Square-Enix is content with dabbling in the genre, rather than redefining it.

To end, I rate. (in a semi-casual way) I give this game an 8/10. The Dragon Quest theme powered by the mechanics of a sandbox was beautifully melded into this game; pun intended. It is ideal for those who want to just sit, relax and have fun with a very colorful game. It offers a level of replayability through its challenges; but overall it is a fairly easy game, which can be a bad thing, I admit. Its focus on the story is what separates it from the genre, and overall offers a unique experience for everyone enjoy.

Dragon Quest Builders‘s sound is absolutely stellar in every way. The return of classic Dragon Quest sound effects is always welcome, but Builders tweaks them ever so slightly to make them more modernized. The music is whimsical and nostalgic, as the soundtrack is largely composed of remixed versions of songs from the original Dragon Quest. These timeless tracks are given new life in these remixes, and provide a feeling of true adventure as you explore the nigh-endless world in front of you.
