Professional reviews from gaming critics
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless fixes the mistakes of the past and capitalizes on its humorous story and fun new mechanics to deliver an unforgettable SRPG that fans will adore.
Not only is this a great Disgaea game, but it is also the best introduction to the franchise or even the genre.
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless sets a new standard for fun and flashy strategy RPGs. It's such a perfect blend of classic Disgaea feel and quirky new mechanics, and it's got some of the most memorable and entertaining characters the series has seen. This is the sequel that fans have been waiting for.
Disgaea 7 has been a fantastic ride. It’s a meaty game to say the least and should you wish to pour hundreds of hours into this game, you easily could. I for one am excited to see what I’ve missed from previous entries and will be there day one for the hopeful Disgaea 8.
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless will overwhelm new players at the start. But once you get over the hump (perhaps with the help of an online guide), it'll likely become one of the most unique and inviting SRPGs you've played in quite some time.Read More
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless mostly feels like business as usual, which is good news for long-time fans and newcomers alike. Some rough edges have been smoothed, though, and the polish works alongside a few smart new features to produce one of the finest entries in the series to date.
Disgaea 7 is the pinnacle of the series. Whether it’s improving existing mechanics or introducing new ones, it simply does everything better.
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless sticks to the tried-and-tested format of its predecessors, for better or worse. If you’re a fan of the series but you’ve found yourself getting a bit tired of the gameplay, there’s not much here that’s going to hugely revitalise your interest. For those who simply can’t get enough, however, this might prove to be a highlight. The visuals are bold and have real character, the story is entertaining, and you have more options than ever when it comes to putting together your team and developing it. For most Disgaea fans, then, that’s more than enough reason to jum...
Disgaea games are pure quicksand. You might think you’re playing an approachable turn-based strategy RPG. But you’ll be up to your armpits in the muck before you know it. Indeed, I need to tread carefully, lest I get lost in 2000 words of systems-based minutiae. Instead, let’s approach Disgaea 7 within the scope of the whole series. After all, there’s really not much to compare a Disgaea game to besides other entries in the same franchise. For example, what’s this one about, anyway?
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is a fantastic return to form for the grinding JRPG and it plays wonderfully on the Steam Deck.
The nonsensical turn-based strategy RPG series Disgaea has always marched to the beat of its own drum. With Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless, this tradition continues, for better or worse. We can't imagine new converts will be won to the cause here, but if you've stuck with the series this long, you'll likely have a Hell of a good time.
If you liked previous Disgaea games — grinding your levels up to max, performing increasingly higher damaging attacks, and seeing a mass of numbers fill your screen — Disgaea 7 continues that trend and amplifies it further.
