A fun mix of a variety of different game types and a must have for any fans of Digimon. Even if you're not too into it the story is fun and the mechanics are extremely well done.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition is a content-packed RPG with plenty to see and do. Its evolution system feels wholly unique when compared to another monster-breeding game series you might find on Nintendo hardware, and while the grind may be too much for some, it’s comfortably one of the best creature-catchers on the Switch – although Pokémon still holds the crown, of course.

Considering there’s over 240 Digimon in the game it’d be insane to think you’d have to amass that collection by only using the Digimon in your party so that’s where your digi-farm comes into play. While you’re out working your way through digital dungeons, any Digimon not in your party can be placed in one of your various farms which can house ten Digimon each. Here your Digimon will level up on their own and you’ll get helpful notifications once they’ve hit their max level so that you can hop in to evolve or de-evolve them. Besides that, you can also set them to train to increase their stats, develop rare items for you, or discover side-quests for you. You’ll eventually get into this groove of running a dungeon and checking on your farm as you plan out evolutions and set tasks for your Digimon. This all makes for a super engaging system that will have you spending hours just to build your dream team.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth plays it safe in a lot of ways, but for many of you out there, that’s going to be perfectly fine. Just don’t expect it to convert you if you’re sworn off the formula.

That said, once you’ve managed to understand the process of Conversion, Digivolution and devolution, training your Digimon to their Ultimate forms can be incredibly rewarding. Seeing your old favourites in all their modern 3D glory is wonderful. It’s a shame that the story takes so long to become engaging, especially since the title itself places such importance on the story, but if you think you’ll enjoy training Digimon enough to persevere through the initially slow narrative there is a lot of fun to be had with Cyber Sleuth.

An easy recommendation for those who watched the anime back in the day and those who have kept up with the series.

Whether a returning fan or simply someone looking for a new roleplaying game to play, Cyber Sleuth caters to both parties. Although those familiar with the brand stand to gain more from this recent revival of the series, the gameplay systems are accessible for just about anyone. Still, despite its overall fun factor, Digimon Story isn’t exactly innovative, while also being hamstrung by a few niggling issues.

Being completely new to the series, I have to say that Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth was a surprising treat for me. I love the JRPG genre, and while the turn-based and slightly grindy nature of the combat likely will not bring new fans to the series, I found it comfortable and accessible to play. On top of that, the cute nature of the critters was not the deterrent to my interest I had always sort of expected, because I enjoyed the virtual world of EDEN and the core story around the game’s events.

That humorous core — buoyed by the Digivolution mechanic and memorable characters — is the game's best feature, and one that always comes as a surprise. The jokes make traversing that dungeon for the umpteenth time a little less taxing, and elevate the game from standard creature battler to a memorable adventure. Cyber Sleuth varies wildly from dreadful stopgap fetch quests to mesmerizing bosses and character developments, but its heart remains constant.

When I was in my formative years, the biggest discussion on the playground was Digimon VS Pokémon. Fast forward to the present day and we’re all well aware that Pokémon came out on top, with the name being globally famous and Pikachu’s face being about as recognizable as a certain Disney mouse’s ears. But Digimon didn’t go away – if Cyber Sleuth is to be believed, Digimon moved away from being the child-oriented Pokémon rival and charted a more mature path forward. Digimon: Cyber Sleuth is an interesting, flawed and yet an incredibly good attempt at recapturing the same audience it was vying for nearly 20 years ago.
