Death Squared might have launched on Steam, but it feels like this game and the Nintendo Switch were made for each other. Deceptively smart puzzles, an endearingly smarmy sense of humor, and organic, instantaneous multiplayer all at a great price make Death Squared a must-buy on Switch.

Death Squared is a co-op puzzler where players must maneuver through a trap-laden labyrinth without inadvertently murdering another player by triggered hazards.

Death Squared ends up being another great multiplayer experience for Switch. Laughs will emerge from accidental and pathetic-looking deaths and likely lead to the eventual furrowed brows of frustration and critical thinking - making for all the integral elements of a good puzzle game. Don't expect a lot of new elements and variables to appear though, the game is kept to a simple, tried-and-true formula that succeeds in boggling minds, all wrapped up in a neat and tidy package.

This colorful, robotic puzzler will get your friends talking and laughing -- even as they die. Repeatedly.

In short, Death Squared is an incredibly fun puzzle game for Nintendo Switch. While it may be unrewarding for second playthroughs and in-game progression, the fact that there are over a 100 levels means that players who love puzzle games will love this too. Not only that, but the seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op means that whether you want to play by yourself, or with a friend, or three other friends, you'll be able to with the just a push of the Joy-Con release. If you have a love of puzzle games and a Nintendo Switch, or if you're having a get together with your friends soon, Death Squared sh...

All this leaves Death Squared in a weird spot – I feel audiences will be alienated by the overwhelming focus on dying and starting over, but take out the death and what remains is a simple, lifeless game about cubes. Much of the game’s spark lies in its multiplayer, so definitely be on the lookout for this one if you’re using your Switch as a shared console. For those who like a bit of challenge in their puzzle games and can look past some basic presentation, Death Squared has enough to satisfy the most daring player.

Death Squared is a great example of a game that fights you every step of the way. However, its sharp and witty narrative mixed with simple pick-up-and-play controls guarantees that you’ll have some frustrating fun with a partner. Just make darn sure to leave your best friends out of party mode if you want to stay that way.

If you're desperate for a local co-op puzzle game, then Death Squared will certainly scratch that itch. However, lack of variety in levels means that it can get pretty monotonous very quickly.

The visuals are nothing overly stylized or special, opting towards the Portal feeling that Death Squared gleefully emits. There’s nothing wrong with this, as the clean style perfectly fits the lab setting, it just means that the visuals themselves don’t stand out. The music fits into the same category, as the majority of the tracks are somewhat forgettable electronica songs. The voice acting, as previously mentioned, is absolutely stellar, which makes up for the music by far.

These exchanges are anywhere from cute to annoying, and this extends to some loading screens where bits and pieces help to fill in the blanks of what appears to be a corporate and squeaky clean future for humanity. Funnily enough this has the occasional effect on gameplay – when David gets his hands on some more advanced controls, he tinkers with the game settings and reverses your controls. This doesn’t disrupt gameplay too much, but it’s an interesting way of connecting the world flavor to the action.
