Card-en-Ciel Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
I originally fell in love with Inti Creates with their Mega Man Zero series and, later, their Azure Striker Gunvolt series. While they’ve had a patch of hits and misses, they have dared to do something different, and that something different is Card-en-Ciel, a roguelite deck-building turn-based battle game. Whew……
Card-en-Ciel’s gameplay is incredibly fun, which makes it an easy recommendation for anyone who has liked games like Slay the Spire or Monster Train but wants an anime twist to it. However, if you’re looking for a more developed story or characters that go beyond just providing window dressing for the core of the gameplay, I’d advise caution. I really enjoyed my time with Card-en-Ciel, especially for someone who loves that kind of card-based roguelite, but I just wish Inti Creates would give us more from the story and presentation.
Card-en-Ciel features over 10 different dungeons, with each one featuring a different game world! You'll meet and collect different characters in each one while seeing the story unfold. Each dungeon is its own roguelite experience, so you'll start with a basic deck and collect cards to build combos and synergies unique to that dungeon. The rules will even change if you choose a higher difficulty, keeping every dungeon dive fresh! Switch version reviewed. Review copy provided by company for testing purposes.
Card-en-Ciel is hardly the most original game on the market. However, the game makes up for this with excellent gameplay and fun presentation.

That’s kind of a shame, and I suspect – or hope – there are people who can look past the melange of stylistic issues that made me dislike the game and enjoy the pretty good card battles at the heart of the title. But for me? I just wanted to be done with it. If you like card battling, I hope you either like the style or can overlook a lot of potential irritations.
While Card-en-Ciel's gameplay is a strong point, everything else about the game leaves a lot to be desired.
