Blair Witch is an instant classic in terms of a horror game. It pulls off tension-building, forces the player to creep themselves out and does it all with a minimum of jump scares. The story alone is a reason to play. If you're brave enough.
Blair Witch is the best Blair Witch game yet. However, its willingness to get you lost can be frustrating despite being so authentic to the franchise. Regardless, despite some uneven presentation, Blair Witch is a passionate love letter to the first and third films in the franchise. It manages to maintain its scares from beginning to end, even if it becomes a little predictable.
Blair Witch is great at building tension and letting you get lost in its unforgiving forest, but sometimes it takes that too literally. It mostly overcomes that, however, thanks to your magic camcorder and superb pooch.
So, is the Blair Witch game a good fit for a franchise many have mostly written off by now? As a fan of said series, I would say yes. It absolutely has its faults, with the poorly paced gameplay and story elements being the worst offenders, but the amazing set pieces and psychological horror do a great job of raising the heart rate of anyone willing to venture through the forest. Ultimately, there are a lot of interesting ideas here, but they simply don’t come together like they needed to in order to make the best of them.
Blair Witch may not be the scariest game out there but the developers have crafted an atmospheric forest that feels true to the lore as well as a solid enough if not poorly paced storyline combined with some solid gameplay mechanics and perhaps the best choice they could have made, the inclusion of Bullet as an integral part of both navigation and combat.
Polish studio Bloober Team is a curious case of a developer that decided to focus on one thing and one thing only: narrative-driven horror games. I’ve had a somewhat mixed history with their games, as I’ve never played anything from them that was just “okay”. It was either dreadful, like Layers of Fear, or surprisingly great, like Observer, one of the few games in which the Switch port ended up being the best of them all. Blair Witch is their newest project, a game based on the franch...
More than anything, the biggest disappointment with Blair Witch is that it somehow feels more like a game that had been made before having the IP applied to it. In the end, the story ends up being incredibly cliche and uninteresting, the setting is not all that fun or even all that frightening to walk around in, and the graphical downgrade is just another unfortunate brick in the wall that kept me from really enjoying my time with the game. If these things don’t sound like deal breakers to you, Blair Witch may still be worth your time to at least try out. Even then I don’t think I’d reco…
1999’s The Blair Witch Project is a film that captivated and horrified its audience when it debuted in 1999, spawning a whole Blair Witch franchise that has spun off into sequels and other media. Now, 20 years later, we have a game simply titled Blair Witch, developed by Bloober Team, the studio that brought us Layers of Fear, its sequel, and Observer. But how does it fare against those games? And better yet, does it stand alone as a competent horror game, or does it live in the shadow of the universe the first film masterfully created?
Technical troubles and predictability hurt what is otherwise a heart-pumping horror with a story worth uncovering.
Bloober Team do manage to flex some of creative muscle in the latter half of the game, but unfortunately the weight and expectations of the Blair Witch property weigh down the narrative that the studio very clearly wants to tell. Genuinely interesting ideas about trauma and regret are intertwined with the Blair Witch mythos to the detriment of both. Plus, the additional time spent wandering and solving arbitrary puzzles before the plot finally gets going is sure to put off less patient players. For fans of the Blair Witch franchise, this game is an interesting vignette which fleshes out the un...
Bloober Team’s misfire takes interesting liberties with the source material but often forgets the terror at the heart of it.“Made by the developers of the Layers of Fear series…”From what I can glean, that statement can land [...]
The Blair Witch Project was a smash hit found-footage horror movie released in 1999, followed by a crummy sequel in 2000 that eschewed much of what made the original popular in the first place. There was a second sequel in 2016 -- confusingly titled Blair Witch -- which we'd forgotten about until we Wikipedia'd the franchise this morning to write this intro.
