Battletoads is a victory for Microsoft, Dlala Studios and Rare. It successfully takes a brand that’s been dormant for over two decades, breathing new life into it and updating it for the modern generation ardently. While it’s a huge shame that Battletoads isn’t playable online, and makes some missteps in it’s third act, it’s hard to deny that this is the most charming rendition of our favourite videogame amphibians. But most of all it's funny, and that's refreshing.
It's been over 20 years since the last Battletoads game-and it was worth the wait. Battletoads is an enjoyable game that brings back the fun beat-em-up aspects of the originals, as well as humorous cutscenes, and minigame stages that show just what happens after the Toads realize their glory days are over.
Battletoads (2020) keeps the soul of the notorious original game intact while revitalizing it with interesting minigames, hilarious writing, and couch co-op that makes this a worthy reason to revisit Zitz, Pimple, and Rash. While the absence of online co-op is pretty disappointing and the beat ‘em up gameplay can become dull by the end of the campaign, this short ride is one I can full-throatedly recommend.
I first had the chance to play the brand new version of Battletoads last year, during the 2019 edition of Brasil Game Show. It was a short demo comprised of the game’s first level plus a painfully long and uninteresting hoverbike section, enough to make me not look forward to the final product. It just reiterated my thought that the Battletoads franchise had never been that good to begin with. I considered it one of my least favorite Rare franchises of the past, a series better known for it...
Despite its short length and occasionally odd use of levels Battletoads succeeds in becoming a toadally worthwhile reboot.
A jack-of-all-trades roguelite that sacrifices depth to reach as many bases as possible, succeeding barely in some, and excelling in others.
Dlala Studios' reboot/sequel of these antique amphibians deftly juggles its varied gameplay conceits and meta-humor, with only Rare missteps. It had been a quarter-century since any new Battletoads game had graced a screen, be it TV or arcade [...]
Battletoads' grand return largely sticks the landing. While some shortcomings make it a recommendation with caveats, it's still a fun, engaging, and clever game that fans of the genre should look into.
Battletoads is another one of 2020’s infamous oddities. I suspect it’s going to be highly polarizing (not only due to the adherence to retro style difficulty but the newness of the art and humor), but it somewhat won me over due to sheer force of will. I also can safely assume that I’m going to be on the higher-end of the spectrum of liking it: but if we never see these dudes again because this game was an absolute cacophony, I’ll be a bit bummed.
I feel the need to start this review with the caveat that I suspect Battletoads falls into the same situation as other rival fandoms. Are you a Beatles fan or
Ultimately, Battletoads is a good time. It somehow emerges from its mish-mash of basic arcade genres as a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Despite the glaring omission of online play and a few rough edges, new and returning fans should be pleased.
Told across a short 3-4 hour campaign, spawning four acts, Battletoads is a self-referential narrative that likes to poke fun at itself, the industry, and several types of gameplay conceits. The animation style is often superb, with incredibly well-made cutscenes that gives us a look at what an actu
