Astro's Playroom Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Astro’s Playroom took me by surprise. I was expecting a short tech demo that would impress me because of the new controller, but instead, I was greeted with a full-blown, short and fun 3D platformer.
A love-letter to PlayStation and PlayStation fans, Astro’s Playroom also happens to be the killer app for showing off just how cool the DualSense controller is. Whatever you do, don’t forget about this one.
The developer, SIE Japan Studio, has forged a platformer from the same blend of delirium and precision that blows through Super Mario, and then filled it with fossils.
Almost perfect if not for the nitty-gritty. If it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.
The Playstation 5 is a beast of a machine, offering lightning fast loading times and gorgeous visuals and resolutions thanks to its sheer horsepower. But that’s not my favorite thing about the new console, though. My favorite innovation featured in Sony’s new system is its brand new controller, the Dualsense. Not only is this thing comfortable like no other Dualshock before it, but it features tons of gimmicks I’ve briefly mentioned in some other PS5 game reviews, like the amazing usage...
Is there an argument that Asobi Team is the most inventive Sony studio right now? The small sector of Japan Studio is certainly getting the most out of the platform holder’s hardware, as Astro Bot Rescue Mission proved by completely reinvigorating the classic 3D platformer on PlayStation VR. With its latest project, free PlayStation 5 pack-in Astro’s Playroom, the group has single-handedly demonstrated the power of the new DualSense controller – but it’s also concocted a love letter to PlayStation that will live with fans long after launch.
Astro's Playroom proves that the DualSense's haptics and adaptive triggers are for real — and that Astro Bot could have a very bright future on PlayStation 5.
As a free pack-in game, Astro's Playroom is a great showcase of the new DualSense controller. More importantly though, it goes above and beyond in celebrating the history of PlayStation. There's throwbacks to PlayStation's greatest games and moments at every turn and it's a genuine delight from start to finish.
Astro’s Playroom serves as a stellar introduction to the PlayStation 5, working both as a persuasive proof of concept of the DualSense controller as well as an engaging 3D platformer. The fact that it’s also the most endearing celebration of Sony’s history in gaming to date just projects it into the upper echelon of meaningful launch titles.
Sony's done it and launched the PS5. Let's see how its first-party launch title, Astro's Playroom fares in this review.
Despite clinging to some underwhelming gimmicks, Astro’s Playroom is a cute-n-capable platformer. When anyone utters the term
Astro's Playroom is a packed in platformer game that serves as a tech demo for the PlayStation 5's Dualsense, while achieving more in its experience.
