Anthem Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Anthem is a competent looter-shooter. It is not an overwhelming, hallelujah-inducing entry into BioWare's storied history, but it's fine. I doubt I'll engage with the game past unlocking the final javelin, even though there is that tease at the end of further content.
Bioware has had a rough time over the past few years. With the controversial Mass Effect 3 ending, the boring Dragon Age: Inquisition, and the disappointing Mass Effect: Andromeda, many have speculated that they’ve lost their magic. Can Bioware’s newest IP end the streak of bad luck and bring Bioware back to the good old days?
Anthem shows a tremendous amount of promise, but what is currently available is disappointedly below standard. Expectation unquestionably plays a factor, but with the talent behind this game and a high standard already set by other very similar titles, I think it's fair to expect better. Anthem's thrilling gameplay, quality presentation and sound design redeem what is otherwise a puzzling mess of questionable design decisions, and telltale signs of a game under pressure to hit the release date. I have no doubt that the game, given time, will only improve and likely be deserving of much better ...
“Anthem’s world is charming, but forced repetition spoils the fun.”
Anthem falls way short of the hype due to repetitive missions and lack of content.
We hoped beyond hope that Anthem would show the world just how sci-fi online action role-playing games were done. What we got, however, was far from that and without some serious improvement, Anthem could take Mass Effect: Andromeda’s crown as BioWare's worst ever release.
Anthem is gorgeous to look at and can be fun in places, but for now it feels decidedly half-baked.

Anthem is a game based on a fantastic idea. Flying around in futuristic mech-suits with friends should have been a slam dunk after six years of development, and Anthem might yet become that game someday. Unfortunately, that's not what it is right now. Despite nailing the feeling of flying around in its Javelin suits and crafting a beautiful world, there's nothing in Anthem to hold a player's interest. It all gets old quickly thanks to bland encounters, dumb enemies, a borderline empty world and a dull story. Add to that a general sense of technical instability, loading issues, non-existent end...
As with any RPG, the pure addicting joy of getting gear with higher and higher numbers is enjoyable. Despite my many qualms with Anthem, it’s an investment game and I have indeed become invested. My Javelin’s gear score is currently at 470 and I look forward to earning more Masterwork and Legendary gear to max that out, although the enemy scaling doesn’t lead me to believe that it’ll make that much of a difference.
With the pedigree of a studio like Bioware at the wheel, many were looking to Anthem for incredible storytelling and complex and deep RPG systems that would place the title alongside the studio’s best. While it’s clear that Anthem did not perform to the expectations of some, it’s still a title that
After dozens of hours spent patrolling Bastion and delving into the secret lives of the residents in Fort Tarsis, I am now ready to give my review in progress. The term ‘in progress’ is a necessity for a game of this type. After all, Anthem is a loot driven, always...
