Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know! Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
What's most frustrating is that with more enemies, more graceful control and a more compelling structure, there's no reason why a retro-styled Adventure Time roguelike couldn't have been an absolute treat and a game worthy of the show. Developer WayForward has certainly made better licensed games than this in the past. But then this is not even a particularly bad game, just a bland and unambitious one that feels like it escaped from a web browser and somehow found its way onto a disc. The wonderfully weird Land of Ooo and its eclectic inhabitants deserved so much more.
In a completely new storyline and adventure, featuring the voices of the show’s most popular characters, fans will have to save the Candy Kingdom by exploring the mysteries surrounding a massive Secret Royal Dungeon deep below the Land of Ooo.
It’s unfortunate for Explore the Dungeon that we are living through an amazing period for dungeon crawlers and roguelikes, but even if we weren’t, it would stand out as depressingly uninventive and simplistic. Unlike the show it’s based on, it’s both deeply boring and devoid of imagination. For a real sense of adventure, play Spelunky.
Adventure Time is ridiculously exuberant. Its characters are eccentric and weird, its storylines are convoluted and odd, and its humour is a mix of silly, low brow, and exceptionally well timed. It's a show of complexity and deep lore based on the insane. Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! – as it's stylised for the only time in this review – is none of these things. It's instead a highly repetitive and shallow grind skinned in Adventure Time wears. And it's so very disappointing.
I can say confidently that if you have a family member whom you want to annoy to death then get them or their children this game. I can assure you that within one week you’ll begin receiving hate mail from them. I went from being excited to play the game to dreading the moments leading up to turning it back on. Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don’t Know is the worst kind of licensed game.
There is absolutely nothing that redeems this game. Once you’ve played through the first level you’ve fundamentally experienced everything that the game has to experience, and because there’s no real sense of progression as you play, the temptation will be there to take it back to the store for an exchange after that first level.
My name is Duchess Gummybuns, and this here is the slamacow review of Adventure Time Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! Truly the grand vizier of all video game names, but does it have the mathematical skills to deliver an experience that can match the hilarious, surreal and weird nature of the show? Mixing a blend of pop culture references, quick fire humour, sarcasm and, obviously, fart jokes means Adventure Time has quickly built up something of a cult following. So here is the chan...
